The Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD)

We currently serve over 4000 families in Broward County affected by autism and related disabilities. To be eligible for individualized services from one of our clinicians, the person must be a Broward County resident and fit into one of the categories below.

  • Individuals of any age with:
  • autism spectrum disorders
  • both hearing and vision impairments
  • hearing or vision impairments accompanied by other disabling conditions
  • related disabilities such as individuals who have autistic-like symptoms along with Fragile X Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Tuberous Sclerosis, or Angelman Syndrome
  • Children under 5 with developmental delay and some autistic-like behaviors
  • Autism And Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network

    The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network is a program funded by CDC to collect data to better understand the number and characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities living in different areas of the United States.

    ADDM Network goals are to:

    • Describe the population of children with ASD,
    • Compare how common ASD is in different areas of the country,
    • Measure progress in early ASD identification,
    • Identify changes in ASD occurrence over time, and
    • Understand the impact of ASD and related conditions in US communities.

    Current Addm Network Activities

    • In January 2019, CDC launched a 5thphase of funding for the ADDM Network .
    • Tracking of the number and characteristics of 8-year-old children with ASD has been ongoing since 2000.
    • Tracking among 4-year-old children began in 2010 to increase our understanding of the characteristics and early identification of younger children with ASD.
    • Follow-up of 16-year-olds began in 2018 and will help inform public health strategies to improve identification of and services for children with ASD. Tracking 16-year-old adolescents with ASD can also provide valuable information on transition planning in special education services and the planned trajectory for post-high school years.
    • In addition to tracking, sites also analyze the data to better understand ASD, and carry out education and outreach activities in their local communities.

    The EFFECT Lab focuses on bridging the gap bridging the gap between research on high quality interventions for children and the implementation of those interventions in community settings such as mental health services. This lab is dedicated to community-partnered implementation research aiming to develop and test effective services for youth as well as effective professional development for treatment providers. Current projects include a National Institute of Mental Health Career Development Award awarded to Dr. Dickson to adapt and test an executive functioning intervention for youth with autism spectrum disorder for implementation in childrens mental health services.

    Dr. Pruitts research program examines child language development and disorders within the context of cultural and linguistic diversity. Our labs efforts are rooted in community-based research with the goal of improving assessment and developing targeted interventions for children with language weaknesses. Through our translational research, we aim to help families, educators, agencies, and policy makers recognize the importance of their role in facilitating childrens language and cognitive development.

    The Center for Autism and Related Disorders, Inc. is an organization that provides a range of services based on applied behavior analysis for children and adults on the autism spectrum.

    CARD was founded in 1990 by Doreen Granpeesheh. The Blackstone Group, a private equity firm, acquired CARD in 2018. Granpeesheh and the management at CARD invested in the company alongside Blackstone, and Granpeesheh remained the CEO until December 2019, when she was replaced by Anthony Kilgore and moved into the role of executive director. In February 2022, Kilgore resigned for undisclosed reasons and was replaced by Jennifer Webster.

    Center For Autism & Developmental Disabilities

    The Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities is a joint program between UT Southwestern, Childrens Medical Center, and the at UT Dallas. The Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities has three missions:

    • First, we provide state-of-the-art medical care for autism and all other neurodevelopmental disabilities. This includes initial diagnostic evaluations and treatment planning, behavioral intervention for recently diagnosed children, treatment services by neurology providers, and a psychopharmacology consultation service for children and adolescents.
    • Second, we provide clinical education for medical students, residents, and graduate students in order to prepare them to deliver services to developmentally disabled individuals over the course of their careers.
    • Third, we conduct research aimed at developing new knowledge about the genetics, neural mechanisms, and behavioral deficits associated with different developmental disorders, while testing new treatment strategies.

    Several active collaborations including clinicians and basic neuroscience researchers are designed to bring new discoveries from animal model work quickly to clinical research programs in order to expedite drug discovery and improve patient care. We have particularly active animal model and clinical research programs focusing on Fragile X and Phelan-McDermid syndromes.

    Autism And Developmental Disorders Clinic

    The Autism and Developmental Disorders Clinic provides evaluation, treatment and consultative services for youngsters from 2-18 who have developmental disabilities as well as a psychiatric disorder. Developmental disorders treated at the clinic include the following:

    • Autistic disorder
    • Delayed or impaired language
    • Impaired social behavior
    • Genetic and Chromosomal disorder: Fragile X, Down Syndrome, Velocardio-facial Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Prader Willis Syndrome, and other chromosome and gene disorders

    The clinic emphasizes treatment and advocacy approaches that alleviate the underlying developmental disorder and target comorbid psychiatric conditions, which may include mood disorder, anxiety disorder, ADHD, behavioral problems or social difficulties that are specific to children with developmental delays.

    Additionally, the clinic has an active educational and research programs. Educational activities consist of supervising child psychiatric fellows and psychologist doctoral students. Clinic faculty and staff are also active in providing instructional workshops to educate clinicians, teachers, and parents about the different aspects of developmental disorders such as diagnosis and treatment.

    Caring for your child at our center begins with an evaluation of their health and needs. Our experts in child psychology and neurology perform in-depth tests to diagnose autism and other developmental disabilities. Treatment includes the latest therapy strategies, such as Applied Behavioral Analysis for children as young as 18 months.     CARD – Autism Recovery Is Possible

    Individuals with autism and related disabilities frequently require specialized services and supports. CARD, The Center for Autism & Related Disabilities, is a network of state-funded outreach and support centers based at universities around the state. In South Florida, the main center is at the University of Miami . The center at NSU is a satellite of UM-NSU CARD and was established in 1999 to serve the community in Broward County.

    We are housed in the Department of Speech Language Pathology in the College of Health Care Sciences at Nova Southeastern University. Our offices are in the SLP Clinic at 6100 Griffin Road . We collaborate closely with the main South Florida CARD Center at the University of Miami.

    The Resource Center for Autism and Developmental Delays provides support for those who care for, teach and serve children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or other developmental delays. RCADD serves families currently enrolled in an Early Head Start or Head Start program as well as others throughout the Chicagoland area.

    RCADD offers support at no cost to our patrons in the form of resources, referrals, training and ongoing consultations for families and professionals.

    Rebecca Landa, PhD, CCC-SLP, is the founder and director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the REACH research program at Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is also a professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Via federal and foundation funding, Dr. Landa has made groundbreaking discoveries about development in children with and without ASD from early infancy into the teen years. She has translated those discoveries into innovative interventions and demonstrated the effectiveness of those interventions in clinical trials in home, clinical, child care, and public school settings. Dr. Landa is the author of the Pragmatic Rating Scale and the Social Communication Interaction and Play Screener.

    She has also developed the Early Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorders Video Tutorial, a free 9-minute video tutorial on behavioral signs in one-year-olds. The tutorial consists of six video clips comparing toddlers who show no signs of ASD to toddlers who show early signs of ASD.

    Each video is presented with voice-over explaining how the specific behaviors exhibited by the child, as they occur on screen, are either indicative of ASD or typical child development.
