Unlike visual neglect, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder does not result from acquired brain damage, but is instead a neurodevelopmental disorder. Persons with ADHD are unable to keep their attention focused they are hyperactive, and prone to distraction and impulsive behaviors. ADHD is a heterogenous condition, which affects around 8% of school-aged children and 4% of adults . The American Psychiatric Association, 1994 distinguishes three clinical subtypes of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactiveimpulsive, and combined.

What Are The Symptoms Of Inattentive Adhd

The American Psychiatric Associations diagnostic manual for ADHD, the DSM-V, lists nine symptoms of inattentive ADHD. In a child or adolescent, at least six of these must be present and must significantly disrupt a patients life in order to merit a diagnosis. After age 17, only five symptoms must be present to warrant a diagnosis of ADHD.

  • Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, at work, etc.
  • Often has trouble holding attention on tasks or activities .
  • Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly.
  • Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace .
  • Often has trouble organizing tasks and activities.
  • Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to do tasks that require mental effort over a long period of time.
  • Often loses things necessary for tasks and activities .
  • Is often forgetful in daily activities.
  • Often distracted by stimuli

How Inattentive Adhd Is Diagnosed

A doctor will need to know if your child does at least six of these things in order to diagnose the condition:

  • Daydreams and becomes easily distracted
  • Misses important details or makes careless mistakes on homework and tests
  • Gets bored quickly and has a hard time staying focused
  • Has trouble getting organized
  • Doesnât seem to listen when spoken to
  • Avoids tasks that require a lot of focus
  • Often loses track of things
  • Is forgetful in day-to-day activities
  • Has trouble following instructions and often shifts from task to task without finishing anything

How To Help A Child With The Condition

If your child is diagnosed, their doctor may prescribe medication to make them more able to concentrate, suggest therapy, or use a small device to help stimulate the part of the brain believed to be responsible for ADHD. This recently FDA-approved device, called the Monarch external Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation System, can be prescribed for patients 7 to 12 years old who are not already taking ADHD medication.

A combination of medicine and therapy is the most common approach.

Behavior therapy also teaches you some parenting tactics, such as:

  • Set up a system of rewards for good behavior.
  • Withhold privileges or take away rewards to deal with unwanted behavior.

Parents, teachers, and counselors can use these methods to help children with inattentive ADHD stay on track:

What Causes Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In Adults

The causes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are unclear, but the condition often runs in families. There appears to be a genetic and neurobiological basis for ADHD. Usually, adults with the predominantly inattentive form of ADHD first developed it during childhood and adolescence. They were likely reprimanded in elementary or middle school, were consistently distracted and turned in incomplete work. However, because children with this form of ADHD usually are not hyperactive, the disorder might have gone unrecognized until they reached adolescence or adulthood. This is especially true for girls and women with inattentive ADHD. Girls may be more quiet and passive than those who do not have the disorder, and therefore they do not stand out in the classroom. At times, adult women can go undiagnosed until one of their children is diagnosed with ADHD. At this point they might recognize similarities in their own behavior patterns and seek professional help.

Researchers are studying environmental trauma and other issues related to pregnancy or early life exposure as other possible factors that may play a role in ADHD.

People who say they have ADD most likely have symptoms of inattentive type ADHD like forgetfulness and poor focus, organization, and listening skills. Inattentive ADHD often resembles a mood disorder in adults, while its seen as spacey, apathetic behavior in children, particularly girls.

    All the children from both ID and IS areas were euthyroid at neonatal screening and afterwards . Neuromotor evaluation revealed no signs of neurological impairment in any of the children. The diagnosis of ADHD was confirmed in 2001 and 2002 in all 9/16 ID area children in whom it had been previously suspected, and in a further 2 children in whom it had not been suspected in 1994.     People with ADD often lack the hyperactivity component that is a prominent symptom of Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD.     A Brief History Of The Adhd

    Since its first appearance in the DSM, there have been controversies surrounding the ADHD-PI subtype of ADHD . For instance, the validity of this subtype has been questioned because prior to its representation in the DSM-III in 1980, it was not expected that there would be children who would present significant attention problems without hyperactivity and impulsivity . The DSM-IV criteria for ADHD have been modified, and other notable updates in the DSM-5 include the addition of two ADHD modifiers, and notably, terminological change from ADHD subtype to presentations.
